Surface collisions are still taken into consideration with the Follow Spline. The problem may be that the spline is embedded under the rope geometry. The Follow spline is mainly used to 'direct' the ivy while growing from a seed point planted on the polygon object. You wanted it, now you have it! With the help of a very specialized generator object plugin (IGSpline) which can be created during 'Birth', you can now animate the growth of your ivy branches using a Sweep NURBS! This object acts sort of like a spline primitive and can be made editable into a normal spline (note: it will lose its ability to grow if made into a normal spline).
